Three Ways the Internet is Changing the Way We Think
1. Increase of witty and concise messages (i.e. text, Facebook, Twitter)
This replaced the 60 second sound-bit on TV
We are exposed to more messages than ever before, therefore giving a tiny dose of attention to all of them.
Nonsense one-liners are flooding the Internet and social media, getting into the hearts and minds of society
2. Internet has diminished the role of factual knowledge in the thinking process
Internet is allowing us to know fewer facts
Harari feels that with the sea of answers the Internet holds the skill “to ask the right question rather than answer a well-posed question” is beginning to dimension.
Example: For many years, 8th grade students have been asked to memorize the Preamble, answer questions about it, and recite it. With the increase use of the Internet there is no need to have students do this anymore. Harrari would say it would be better worth our time, as educators, to guide kids in asking good questions about the document and use those to engage in web-based inquiry. 3. Internet has changed teaching and learning
Internet provides educational resources, lessons, and teaching strategies that past generations did not have access to.
Educators must be aware of the endless resources but also the lurking dangers behind the use of the Internet
